Introduction: Did you ever had the feeling of waking up one fine day and suddenly thinking about what am I doing here? It’s like walking through the journey of life and suddenly realizing what I am doing with it? It’s like a pain jolting you and making you feel that the time until now is spent clueless and worthless.
Perhaps you do make New Year goals, for example, losing weight and initially do take some action. For example, you do cycling or run daily and only realize that you are not losing weight. It’s not about putting in that effort but not tracking the progress of losing weight, that makes you give up. That you cannot see the inches or physical weight being lost, you feel angry and delay or postpone it.
Here in this article, we will explore the art and science of goal setting and how to do it and succeed in it.
What is Goal Setting?
Goal setting is the art and science of visualizing your future self. Everyone has a specific desire or dream. It’s the process of converting your dreams into reality by taking specific steps in that direction. The goals can be as simple as introducing a new product line, learning a new skill, achieving financial freedom, and losing weight.
Goal Setting also helps us to understand that if we achieve results in one, then the same principles can be applied to achieve the results in other areas. It also means that making progress in one area will inspire and motivate us to set bigger goals in that area. Also, it means making headway towards other goals which have been developed. As the famous quote goes,” If we fail to plan, then we plan to fail.”
Another fundamental reason In the Goal Setting process is the compelling reason to achieve it. It’s this reason which helps you to stay focused even during challenging times. When you are emotionally tied to the goal, then you will invest your time, energy, and effort to make sure that you accomplish it.
How do we do it?
1) Sit in Quiet Place: Please make sure that when you are working on your goals, it should be a quiet place where you can get into your flow state and think on it without any interruptions. Also, make sure that there are no distractions in the area where you are working.
2) Do Brain Storming exercise of each goal: Once the above step is done, this is the next step. You need to brainstorm for a minimum of 10–15 minutes. The basic rule to follow is that you need to capture everything on paper, anything that comes to your mind, which is your creative ideas and past experiences; maybe you need to do research on it or talk to the subject matter expert or someone who can help. The idea here is to be as natural and authentic as possible.
3) Filter the List: Once the above step is done, the next step is to filter it. List down all the steps which you need to do to accomplish it under each of the goals. Make a list to a count of 3 things only. Divide this into short and long-term goals. The vital thing to note here is that “What” is more important than “ How.’
4) Introduce SMART goals: Once we arrive at this stage, we need to follow the concept of SMART goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. Making and structuring your goals in this manner will help you stay motivated and keep track of the progress of your goals. Furthermore, once you achieve your goals, then you can also celebrate them.
Conclusion: By doing the goal-setting exercise, we can realize our true potential. We also can raise our standard so that we can become better as an individual.
