The Only Thing Which Is Constant is Change

Introduction: The ancient Greek philosopher mentioned, “The only thing which is constant is change.” Change is difficult, yet we struggle and resist and fight it. The program in our mind may not support us and give us success because of our past conditioning. We always work from our comfort zone. Generally, we find it difficult to change as some fear stall our progress.

We need to realize that nothing is permanent. Whatever we resist will persist. When passing through a complex or challenging situation, we need to understand that this is only temporary and not permanent. We need to be in a state of awareness and realize that everything is in a state of flux. Whatever comes into our life will eventually change. For example, we experience changing seasons or weather.

The Holy Bhagavad Gita also talks about change. It changes our perspective towards life if we recollect it every day.

“Whatever has happened, has happened for good

Whatever is happening is also for good

Whatever will occur shall also be good

Do not regret the past,

Do not regret the future

Concentrate on your present”

Humans have a love-hate relationship with change. When situations are going wrong for us, we can take comfort in that it may not remain the same no matter what. The condition may for good or bad, will be different.

When life is going good, ‘we want it to stay this way for perpetuity.” Nevertheless, unfortunately, that is not how life works. If change is unavoidable, how do you cope up to handle it? All of us are impacted by it, but we are deeply influenced by how we feel about change.

Needless to say, how we feel about change depends on the situation. However, when we experience and are going through it, a positive and healthy attitude toward the idea of change is essential.

Here are some of the coping strategies but not all, to help understand and handle life’s situation:

1) Awareness: The first step is awareness. Once we are aware of the situation, we can devise plans to handle it.

2) Acceptance: The next step is to accept and acknowledge it. Acknowledging gives us the energy to think about it and go to the next step.

3) Mentor: We need to find a mentor whom we can depend upon. The mentor’s role is to guide us through the journey to emerge stronger than before.

4) Journaling: By writing down all our thoughts and feeling, we give our mind an outlet to download them. Journaling helps us to understand ourselves in a better way in terms of what makes us happy and unhappy. By having a good relationship with ourselves, we are better positioned to handle life’s situation.
